Of Boycotts and Beans

I was pretty new to the co-operative movement when I joined Common Ground so the culture of our store has shaped my view of what a food co-op should look like. I appreciate our little shop and even how the limited shelf space forces us to carefully choose which products we sell. It’s a complex interplay between space, member demand, and the co-op’s mission statement.

Enjoying the sunlight

The sunlight today was not to be missed. While on the way back from walking my daughter to school, I was dazzled by it. The street where we have walked to and from school for years now is a quintessential Urbana street, lined with tall trees that provided dappled glimpses of the sun. As I walked I closed my eyes and tried to soak up the warmth that bled through treetops in patches. It was the first cold morning of the year.

Who, me? Why YOU might want to join the Common Ground Board of Directors

There are so many ways to be involved at Common Ground, be it shopping in the store, reading the weekly Bytes, helping out at the Urbana farmer’s market, attending a roundtable discussion, responding to a blog entry, or bringing in reusable plastic bags. Here’s a new one: have you ever thought about running for the board of directors at your co-op? I joined the board this past May, and when I was thinking of running, I was reminded of a children’s chanting game from when I was little: Who stole the cookies from the cookie jar? KATRINA stole the cookies from the cookie jar.

Why is Growth Important?

When I started working for the co-op as an Outreach Coordinator back in early 2005, I was a new member as well as a new employee and oh!

Why My CGFC Membership Matters

Membership means joining and committing with others in an organized way to do something in common. At CGFC we have our mission statement:

"A cooperatively owned grocery store that promotes local and organic production, fosters conscious consumerism, and builds community."

Ownership, Values, and Community Assets

(alternative title: "But how can the Strawberry Fields Cafe be closing?")

What do Boards do?

It’s a question many members may have asked themselves. Before joining the Common Ground Food Coop Board I have often wondered just what does the Board actually do. What projects are we working on? What happens at our monthly meetings? What relationship to the membership does the Board have? What goals do we have and how do we arrive at them?

A world of co-ops

I have always shunned conferences. Despite being a pretty social person, valuing community, and having a desire to learn new things, the idea of attending a conference has always had the equivalent appeal of a dentist visit. I envision hordes of too-eager folks crammed into small rooms, consuming institutional swill from a buffet, and listening to droning speakers while they examine their goody bags of corporate freebies. This wasn't an unfounded distaste...I've been to one of those conferences.

Please vote!

Greetings everyone,

There are only four days left to vote for candidates for the Board of
Directors. Voting is very simple. Just ask the person at the
register for a ballot, fill it out, and hand it back to them. It only
takes a minute.

Choosing directors is a crucial part of what makes a co-op a co-op.
This democratic control of the representatives that craft policy on
your behalf is a right for each member, and ensures that the

Greetings everyone!

Welcome to the new CGFC Board of Directors blog. We hope that the board blog helps the board better communicate with the membership. We'll try to update it at least weekly with information on what the board is working, both inside and outside of meetings. We'll also use it to gather member feedback on issues that are important to the co-op.

Eat good food!

Peace,
